AJMER / PUSHKAR

Jodhpur | Jaisalmer | Khuri/Sam Village | Bikaner | Jaipur | Ajmer / Pushkar | Udaipur

Ajmer is like an oasis in the otherwise barren land of Rajasthan. The city was founded by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan in the 7th Century A.D. Today, Ajmer is reputed as major center for culture and education for both the Hindus and Muslims. It is also the base for visiting Pushkar - the abode of Lord Brahma.

Major Attractions of Ajmer

Khawaja Shareef Dargah, Ajmer

The Dargah in Ajmer

Located at the foot of the barren hill, The dargah is reputed as a major center for people from all faiths. It is the splendid tomb of the Sufi saint Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti more popularly known as Khawaja Saheb or Garib Nawaz. The shrine is next only to Mecca or Medina for the Muslims of South Asia.

Adhai-din-ka-jhonpra

Located on the outskirts of the city, it is a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture. It was originally a Sanskrit college, built within a temple. In 1193 A.D. Mohhamed Ghauri conquered Ajmer and converted the building into a mosque by adding a seven arched wall in front of the pillared hall in just two-and-half days (adhai-din) and hence the name. The distinct pillars-and arched "Screen" with its ruined minarets make it a splendid architectural masterpiece.

Taragarh Fort in Ajmer
The magnificent Taragarh Fort offers excellent views of the city. The fort of Rajasthan was the site of the military activity during the Mughal period, later used as a sanatorium by the British.

Shopping in Ajmer
Ajmer offers a variety of handcrafted items that reflect the excellence of traditional Rajasthani handicraft. You can shop for old silver jewelry with exquisite designs. The annual urs is the best time to bargain some of the most colorful items that belong distinctly to Ajmer.

Pushkar

Pushkar in Rajasthan is reputed as the only town that has the temple dedicated to Lord Brahma.

The little city of Pushkar has its own distinct charm that is unmatched by any other city.

A perfect town nestled into the side of the Snake Mountains and lining Lake Pushkar. Whitewashed buildings, patterned at minarets line the lake shore, pilgrims on the ghats performing puja all seems to have come straight from the fairy tales.
